On Thursday 10 Oct`2013, a new Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir was inaugurated @ the over 100 years old Kudroli Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple. A magnificent 5.7 ft tall Vietnamese marble statue of Sai Baba, sculpted by Bharadwaj of Jaipur, was consecrated at this new Temple, which was all illuminated with colorful lights.

09:30 am - Ganahoma followed by Kalasa Pooja.
11:15 am - Prathistapane followed by Abhisheka, Shikara Prathiste and Mahapooja.
Lokesh Shanthi performed the rituals of Sudarshan Homa, Vaastu Homa and Brahmakalashotsava.
The traditional ceremony of lighting of lamps was also held to mark the inaugural of the Mandir on this occasion.

The total cost of constructing this Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir has been borne by Santosh Poojary's hard-earned savings. Shri.Santosh Poojary is the son of the Former Union Minister & senior Congress leader Shri.B Janardhan Poojary, who also happens to be the managing trustee of the Kudroli Temple.

In a Historically revolutionary step, 2 Widows - Lakshmi Shanti and Indira Shanti were officiated as Priests at this Kudroli Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple !!! Not only were they allowed to perform Pooja in the Sanctum Sanctorum to the newly installed Idol of Sai Baba but were also allowed to distribute ‘Prasadam’ and holy water to the congregation.

This Historic step is being praised for setting a precedence because in olden days when things were very different, let alone widows offering prayers, they were not even allowed to light lamps in Temples. They were traditionally shunned as nauspicious and barred from social activities.

Shri.Janardhan Poojary, responsible for promoting this initiative, said that these 2 Widows would be in charge of worshiping the main deities whenever the regular (male) priests were on leave; but would also be free to join the rituals on other days. He also reiterated that the move was aimed at overcoming stereotyped image of widows in society & bringing them to the mainstream by ending discrimination against them. He said that he was a disciple of Brahmashree Narayana Guru Swamiji and believed in his philosophy of 'One Faith, One God'. He added that no single holy book has ever barred women from performing pooja and every rule against man or woman has been made by human beings.

He added that it is baseless to say that a woman should stay away from religious programs after losing her husband or on certain days of the month. Things should keep changing in the Hindu society as change was a part of the Hindu culture.

Emphasizing that Narayana Guru had preached equality in society, Poojary said that his move will be a mark of respect to the Women & if any married women or girls of any caste, creed or religion wanted to become priests they would be welcomed here to take up training at the Temple.
